Micro and Macro analysis

Macro: genre, narrative and representation

Micro: sound, semiotics and camera editing

Micro elements

Genres refer to a category within a media text, this might be multiple or none

Questions you are able to ask

What genre is this? ,how do i know this? ,what does this con-notate?, is this pushing boundaries?

Donnie Darko

Genre:horror thriller

This is because the scenery is dark and doesn’t have bright colours.

Target audience: teenagers

The colours are dark or blue con-notating sadness and misery. From context the film may be scary or confusing. The narrative is hard to analyse because of the nature of the film. A narrative does not have to be linear.

Gregory Crewsons photos

are often disturbing using fog

the narrative of the picture shows like an early morning of a stopped car in the middle of the road at amber lights

Representation

How is this media presented by the media? The news uses only pictures that are only positive to their presentation and only reinforces their views

In the song “Blurred lines” their are many sexist themes but this was a selling strategy

Micro elements semiotics

derives from the study of language, semiotcs: Study of symbols and signs physical, auditory or implied

A physical sign is a icon and a implied sign is an index

Different photos can mean different things  like a boxer standing over an opponent can mean victory or a fight well fought

Micro elements mise en scene

In french it means to put things in the scene, so why each object is placed where it is

Micro elements lighting: each scene has different lighting and character specific colours
